Letter from the President

As we aspire to be a leading global land grant university, we must attract and retain the best students and faculty members from all backgrounds. We must build a community of leaders and engaged citizens with the cultural competence to live and work anywhere, with anyone, on any problem, no matter how far-reaching and complex.

Upon arriving at Virginia Tech in 2014, I was encouraged by work of so many committed individuals reflected in the 2013-2018 Diversity Strategic Plan. I appreciate the ongoing commitment of university leadership and the Board of Visitors exemplified in the update and reaffirmation of our Principles of Community(link).  The creation of a position that unifies strategic planning with inclusion and diversity signifies another milestone, with Dr. Menah Pratt-Clarke assuming the role of Vice Provost for Inclusion and Diversity and Vice President for Strategic Affairs.  

InclusiveVT is a new phase in the process of building an inclusive and diverse campus with the goal of distinguishing Virginia Tech as an example of the modern land-grant research university. InclusiveVT stresses university-wide leadership, responsibility, and accountability. 

While these tools and resources are important, they exist to support our greater goal, a community in which inclusion and diversity is endemic, inextricably woven through the fabric of our university. I am personally committed to advancing the principles of inclusion and diversity, through the Office of the President, and in my daily campus activities.  We must lead intentionally and make these principles part of every conversation.  Inclusion and diversity is our pathway to excellence.
