Dear LGBTQ Faculty and Staff Caucus:

Thank you for your message this week. I have had an opportunity to speak with the president and he and I are in agreement.  He is in support of this message to you. 

Virginia Tech values inclusion and diversity.  Our Principles of Community are a key hallmark of our university, and our anti-discrimination policy (Policy 1025) makes clear that we will not tolerate discrimination. Specifically, our policy states: “Virginia Tech does not tolerate discrimination or harassment on the basis of age, color, disability, gender (including pregnancy), gender identity, gender expression, genetic information, national origin, political affiliation, race, religion, sexual orientation, veteran status, or any other basis protected by law.”  We proudly stand behind our Principles of Community and Policy 1025.

On a federal level, earlier this week, President Trump’s administration withdrew Title IX policy guidance that was issued by the previous administration’s Department of Education. This action in no way modifies our policies and Principles of Community.  Moreover, the federal actions in no way modify Executive Order 61, which was issued by Virginia’s Governor Terry McAuliffe.  This executive order adds gender identity to the commonwealth’s prohibitions of discrimination.

Thank you again for communicating your concerns on this matter.  Together, we look forward to continuing to foster an inclusive and diverse community at Virginia Tech.
