Fall Beginnings
September 8, 2022
A new semester is underway, and on a college campus, the mission is education, knowledge, and learning. I’m starting off my year focused on learning, reading, and writing, too. I just finished reading The 1619 Project by Nikole Hannah-Jones. The Faculty Women of Color in the Academy National Conference invited Nikole to be a keynote speaker, and she was amazing. I wrote a blog about the book, reflecting on American history and the way in which as Black Americans we have refused to accept the cards we were dealt. We are seeking new cards; new games; new rules. I believe that every community that believes in the potential of America to live up to its ideals for all people should read The 1619 Project. Americans who wanted to "do more" and "be allies," in the aftermath of George Floyd, appalled at the hate that African-Americans have addressed for years, should read The 1619 Project.
